Canvas is an ASU licensed web conferencing tool available to all ASU faculty, staff, and students. Not only may users host online meetings, but they can share their screen and video record sessions if needed. Only the host needs to log into their ASU ZOOM account to create a new meeting. Attendees can participate using Canvas or a provided ZOOM link. Meeting schedules will also sync to the ZOOM desktop application.

**To use ZOOM in a Canvas course, instructors need to make sure their account settings email is defaulted (starred) to the [email protected] email address.**

Extra points, or credit, can be allotted to a student’s grade box on an assignment when needed. Please communicate grade calculations to students when this is performed to avoid final grade confusion.

**Steps are performed using the New Gradebook, if your gradebook looks different, please adjust steps as needed**

The Canvas Calendar is a Global Navigation feature that automatically displays all assignment and date set items within Canvas courses automatically. The system synchronizes with a user’s enrolled courses, so no editing is required in the Calendar unless desired. Any changes to items in a course will automatically update into the Canvas Calendar for both instructors and students to view. Instructors will be able to see both published and unpublished items on the calendar while students ONLY see published items.

**The way instructors calendar is displayed may appear different from the student side such as crossed out items and what has been be added on the calendar whether by the instructor or student themselves**

Subscribing to multiple discussions in Canvas triggers notifications to be sent to you, the user, as long as your account notifications have also been set up to receive them. Users will be notified of new posts and replies made by any user in the course.

Attaching items to discussion posts allows students to provide resources or materials that support their replies or follow discussion requirements. Instructors should decide if this option is necessary for a discussion post or not. Turning on or off this feature applies to all discussions, there is no way to single-out one discussion.

**Student file attachments will NOT count against your 2GB course file limit. Student submissions are cloud-stored**

Breakout rooms can be created using a CSV file import if hosts desire to divide a large number of users with ease. Zoom provides a template CSV file for hosts to download and complete that can then be imported into a newly scheduled Zoom meeting. Hosts must enable the “Breakout Room” feature and have the “Allow host to assign participants to breakout rooms when scheduling” feature turned on to complete these steps.

**When copying and pasting data into the CSV file, users should paste only the values into the spreadsheet to avoid carrying over other underlying data that will prevent the import from processing correctly in Zoom.**

Peer Reviews in Discussions function similarly to Peer Reviews for online assignments. Students will still initially post their thoughts relating to the discussion prompt. However, they will additionally provide comments and possibly rubric scores on their classmates’ posts. Rules and examples should be provided by instructors on how peer reviews must be completed for optimum feedback and participation.

**Rubric scores from peers will not populate into a student’s assignment grade. The instructor must provide the grade themselves for a student to earn credit. In addition, grades cannot be automatically allotted to completed peer reviews. Instructors must create a separate, no submission, graded assignment to enter scores into

Default channels in Slack allows workspace administrators to set the channels that should appear for new members joining the workspace. New members will also already be joined into the default channels and can start messaging within them instantly.

Unfortunately, existing members to the workspace will not see new or default set channels automatically appear. They will need to search for and manually join them or be invited. Additionally, private channels cannot be selected as a default channel as they require members to be invited to them by a user already in it.

**Channels #General and #Random will already exist in the workspace and can be renamed as needed. Only the #Random channel can be deleted or set as private.**

A Slack workspace is a shared environment between joined or invited users that displays channels set by the administrator. Users will be able to communicate and collaborate with others within the workspace. At ASU, workspaces may be used between departments or for courses requested by the instructor. Some workspaces may be public where users can join them voluntarily, while others may be private and require invitation by the workspace administrator.

The Instant messaging platform Slack is available as a third-party tool integration in Canvas for students and faculty to use. Slack can be used to boost communication and collaboration efforts in your Canvas course and can be added after the course request process.
