Turnitin
Turnitin is ASU's originality and similarity checking tool for Canvas assignments. It compares submitted work against student papers, websites, publications and other sources, then generates a Similarity Report instructors and students may use to review academic writing and citation practices.

Academic integrityCanvas integration
LTI supports single sign-on and gradebook syncingGetting started
- Faculty enable Turnitin on a Canvas assignment when similarity checking is needed to support academic integrity.
- Students submit the assignment through the normal Canvas upload process and may need to accept the Turnitin End-User License Agreement.
- Turnitin generates a Similarity Report for each uploaded file after submission.
- Students can open Submission Details in Canvas and select the similarity percentage when report viewing is available.
Activity examples
- Use Similarity Reports to help students review source use, citation practices and matched text before or after submission.
- Support drafting and revision when Faculty allow students to view originality reports or resubmit assignments.
- Review written assignments, research papers and other text-based submissions for academic integrity conversations.
- Use Faculty feedback workflows alongside Canvas grading when the assignment requires written comments or rubric review.
FAQ
Students submit via a Canvas assignment in which the Faculty has enabled Turnitin. Students cannot submit directly to Turnitin for a course assignment unless the Canvas assignment uses Turnitin.
Turnitin compares submitted files against prior submissions, ASU student work, other student papers, web content, publications, and other source collections.
Students should review the Similarity Report when it is available and check for citation, quotation, or source-use issues. Reports generally take about 15 minutes to process.
Accessibility, privacy, and other considerations
Accessibility
- Use clear assignment instructions so students know whether a Similarity Report will be generated and whether they can view it.
- Provide guidance on how to interpret matched text, since a similarity score does not automatically determine plagiarism.
Privacy and course use
- Use Turnitin only for appropriate written assignment review and academic integrity workflows.
- Direct students to ASU support and Turnitin privacy resources when they have questions about submissions or report access.
