Honorlock

Honorlock is an on-demand online proctoring service for exams. It combines automated monitoring with live proctor assistance and provides the instructor and exam reviewers with recordings and flags for review. Getting started

For instructors: Open Honorlock in the Canvas course, locate the exam and select Enable. Configure proctoring settings, permitted materials and clear exam instructions.

  • Prepare students: Share technology, identification and camera requirements before the first exam. Provide a practice assessment with the same settings as the graded exam.
  • Setup guides: Instructor Canvas guide

For students: Use Google Chrome and install the Honorlock extension. Check your device, webcam, microphone and internet connection before exam day.

  • Launch the exam: Open the exam in Canvas and select Launch Proctoring. Follow the prompts for authentication, camera setup, workspace scanning and screen sharing.
  • Setup guides: ASU student overview | ASU camera setup

Activity examples

  • Practice assessments: Let students rehearse authentication and camera placement before a graded exam.
  • Exams with permitted resources: Specify allowed notes, scratch paper, calculators or websites so students and proctors share the same expectations.
  • Remote quizzes and exams: Monitor a timed assessment while students test within the course availability window.

Compare your options

Use Honorlock when an exam needs remote proctoring and session evidence for instructor review. Use Respondus LockDown Browser when the primary need is restricting access to other applications and websites during a Canvas exam.

ToolBest forWhen to choose it

Accessibility, privacy, and other considerations

Accessibility

  • Arrange accommodations before the exam and test assistive technology in a practice assessment. Record proctoring or authentication allowances in Honorlock's Accommodations field, which is visible to proctors and support staff. Set extra time, availability dates and attempts separately in Canvas.

Privacy

  • Tell students which webcam, microphone, screen and workspace information will be collected for the exam. Share Honorlock's privacy resources in advance and offer a way to discuss concerns before testing.

Other considerations

  • Give students time to arrange a supported device, stable internet, suitable lighting and any required side-angle camera. Explain permitted resources and how technical interruptions will be handled. The camera overlay is a setup aid; students remain responsible for meeting the exam requirements.
